Insurance made simple

How to compare insurance quotes in the USA and save

Start with the coverage, not the price

The cheapest insurance quote is only a good deal if it covers what you actually need. Before you shop for car insurance, homeowners insurance or health insurance, decide on your liability limits, your deductible and the add-ons you want. Then ask every insurer to quote that exact same package.

Not sure what the words in your policy mean? Our insurance terms glossary and our guide on how to read your insurance policy decode premiums, limits, exclusions and endorsements in plain English.

Then cut the price the smart way

Once coverage is set, compare at least three quotes, ask about discounts most people miss and see whether bundling home and auto really saves you money. Understanding how insurers calculate your rates shows you which levers you control.

Finally, review your coverage every year and after big life events such as moving to a new state, buying a home or leaving your job.

FAQ

Questions we hear every day

Is Insurances.ltd an insurance company?

No. We are an independent publisher. We do not sell insurance, provide quotes or handle claims, which lets us explain coverage without a sales agenda.

How do I find the cheapest insurance?

Compare quotes from at least three licensed insurers for identical coverage, limits and deductibles, then ask about every available discount. The cheapest policy is not always the best value if it leaves you underinsured.

Does insurance work the same in every state?

No. Insurance is regulated by each state, so required coverages, consumer protections and prices vary. Your state department of insurance is the best source for local rules.

When can I buy health insurance?

Marketplace plans are generally sold during Open Enrollment, from November 1 to January 15 in most states, or during a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event such as losing coverage, moving or having a baby.

How often should I review my coverage?

At every renewal and after major life events: buying a home or car, getting married, having a child, changing jobs or starting a business.

What insurance is required by law in the US?

Most states require auto liability insurance to drive, and most states require workers’ compensation once a business has employees. Homeowners insurance is not required by law but is usually required by your mortgage lender. There is no longer a federal penalty for not having health insurance, though a few states have their own mandate.

How much does small business insurance cost?

It depends on your industry, location, payroll and claims history. Many small businesses pay a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a year for general liability, and a Business Owner’s Policy often costs less than buying liability and property coverage separately.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts paying on a claim. A higher deductible usually lowers your premium, but you need to be able to afford it if something happens.

Is term or whole life insurance better?

For most families term life insurance is the most affordable way to replace income for a set number of years. Whole life lasts your entire life and builds cash value, but it costs much more for the same death benefit.

Do I need renters insurance if my landlord has insurance?

Yes. Your landlord’s policy covers the building, not your belongings or your personal liability. Renters insurance is usually one of the cheapest policies you can buy.
