There is no single best life insurer for everyone. Large mutual companies such as Northwestern Mutual, New York Life, MassMutual and Guardian hold A++ ratings from AM Best, while Mutual of Omaha, Pacific Life, State Farm and Banner Life stand out for specific needs. Compare financial strength, complaint records, products and price, then get several quotes.
Choosing a life insurer is a long-term decision. A term policy may last 20 or 30 years, and a permanent policy may last the rest of your life, so the company behind it needs to be financially solid, fair with claims and able to offer the type of coverage you actually need. This guide compares eight well-known U.S. insurers using public, verifiable data rather than marketing claims.
How We Picked the Best Life Insurance Companies
We did not buy or test policies. Instead, we reviewed published data and independent rankings and focused on four criteria:
- Financial strength. AM Best ratings show an independent view of an insurer’s ability to pay claims. NerdWallet’s methodology notes that top insurers carry A+ or A++ (Superior) ratings. Every company below holds an A rating or higher.
- Complaint record. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) tracks consumer complaints relative to a company’s size. We used NAIC-based findings reported by NerdWallet, insurance.com and Policygenius.
- Product range. Whether the company offers term, whole, universal and specialty coverage such as final expense or guaranteed issue.
- Buying experience. Whether you can get quotes or buy online, or must work with an agent or financial advisor.
Ratings and rankings change. Before you buy, confirm the current AM Best rating and check your state insurance department or the NAIC for complaint data on the specific company that will issue your policy.

The Insurers in Detail
Northwestern Mutual
Northwestern Mutual holds an A++ rating from AM Best, according to insurance.com, and ranked first in insurance.com’s 2026 survey-based ranking. NerdWallet reports far fewer complaints than expected and says it had the lowest complaint ratio among the insurers it reviewed. NerdWallet names it best for universal life. The trade-off: you cannot buy online, most policies require a medical exam, and NerdWallet notes the website gives limited detail on coverage and riders.
New York Life
New York Life also holds an A++ rating, per insurance.com. NerdWallet calls it best for seniors who want customizable coverage, reports fewer complaints than expected and notes that some policies are eligible for dividends. It also offers guaranteed issue coverage through AARP. Quotes are not available online, and most policies require an exam and an agent.
MassMutual
Policygenius lists MassMutual with an A++ AM Best rating and names it best for whole life. NerdWallet reports far fewer complaints than expected and highlights its broad policy range and online claims. Expect to speak with an agent for most quotes and to take a medical exam for most policies.
Guardian Life
In September 2025, AM Best affirmed Guardian Life Insurance Company of America’s A++ (Superior) financial strength rating with a stable outlook, citing balance sheet strength it assesses as strongest and very strong enterprise risk management. NerdWallet rates Guardian among its top picks for people with health conditions and notes policies for HIV-positive applicants. You can get quotes online but must contact Guardian to buy, and an exam is usually required.
State Farm
Policygenius lists an A++ AM Best rating for State Farm and an NAIC complaint index of 0.2, meaning fewer complaints than expected. Its Select Term policy comes in 10, 20 or 30-year terms for issue ages 18 to 75, and it also sells whole, universal and final expense coverage. Policies are sold only through State Farm agents, and Policygenius notes coverage is not available in Massachusetts and that no-exam term tops out at $50,000.
Mutual of Omaha
Policygenius lists Mutual of Omaha with an A+ rating and names it best for final expense coverage. Its lineup includes term, no-exam term, final expense, universal and indexed universal life. It also issues the guaranteed issue policy sold through USAA, according to NerdWallet. See our full Mutual of Omaha life insurance review for details.
Pacific Life
Policygenius rates Pacific Life A+ with AM Best and names it best for 20-year term. In insurance.com’s 2026 ranking, it had the lowest average rates among the insurers surveyed. Policygenius notes its traditional term life is not available in New York.
Banner Life
The Banner Life family of companies holds an A rating from AM Best and was named best overall by Policygenius, which highlights term lengths of up to 40 years and a no-exam term option. Its rating is one notch below the A+ and A++ companies in this list.
How to Choose Among Them
- Decide on the policy type first. If you need coverage for a set period, such as until a mortgage is paid off, term life is usually the most affordable choice. If you want lifelong coverage or cash value, look at insurers known for whole or universal life.
- Check financial strength. Look for an A rating or higher from AM Best and confirm it is for the specific company issuing your policy, since subsidiaries can carry different ratings.
- Review complaint data. The NAIC complaint index compares complaints to a company’s size. A score below 1.0 means fewer complaints than expected.
- Compare real quotes. Rankings do not tell you what you will pay. Your price depends on age, health, tobacco use, sex, state, term length and coverage amount.
- Confirm availability. Products, riders and underwriting rules vary by state and insurer, and some policies are not sold in every state.
An independent licensed agent or broker can compare several of these companies at once, while captive agents represent one company. Either way, read the policy and riders carefully before you sign.
Bottom Line
The best life insurance company is the one that combines strong financial ratings, a clean complaint record and the right product at a fair price for your situation. Northwestern Mutual, New York Life, MassMutual, Guardian and State Farm carry A++ ratings, while Mutual of Omaha, Pacific Life and Banner Life fill specific niches. Use this list as a shortlist, verify current ratings, compare quotes from several insurers and talk with a licensed agent before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Which life insurance company has the best AM Best rating?
A++ is the highest AM Best financial strength rating. Several large life insurers hold it, including Northwestern Mutual, New York Life, MassMutual and Guardian, according to insurance.com, Policygenius and AM Best’s 2025 Guardian affirmation. Ratings can change, so check the current rating of the specific company that issues your policy before buying.
What is a good NAIC complaint index for a life insurer?
The NAIC complaint index compares a company’s complaints with what would be expected for its size, with 1.0 as the baseline. A score below 1.0 means fewer complaints than expected. For example, Policygenius reports an index of 0.2 for State Farm. Look at several years of data, since one year can be misleading.
Is it better to buy life insurance from a mutual company?
Mutual insurers are owned by their policyholders and may pay dividends on eligible permanent policies, though dividends are not guaranteed. NerdWallet notes some New York Life policies are dividend-eligible and Northwestern Mutual has paid consistent dividends. Stock insurers can be just as strong and competitive, so compare ratings, complaints, products and price.
Can I buy life insurance online without an agent?
Sometimes. Some insurers and marketplaces let qualifying applicants apply and buy term coverage online, often without a medical exam. Others, including Northwestern Mutual, New York Life and State Farm, sell mainly through agents or advisors, according to NerdWallet and Policygenius. Online availability and coverage limits vary by insurer, age, health and state.
